Altares del Mundo is an annual event based on the "Day of the Dead" and all Saints Day celebrations. Sacramento artists come together to create art installations reflecting traditional and non-traditional interpretations of this celebration of remembrance. Altars represent a variety of artistic and personal expression and often include subjects such as family members, friends, pets, celebrities, social trends, environmental issues, political statements, tragedy, misfortune and war.

About Us

The Altares del Mundo tradition (fondly known as the Altar Show) was started in 1993 by an organization of artists and community members wanting to expand on contemporary and cross-cultural interpretations of the Mexican celebration and event - Day of the Dead, "Dia de los Muertos." This exhibition is an event of personal reflection, honoring and questioning. Artists of all nationalities and ethnic backgrounds have participated in the exhibition, and the subject matter is as diverse as the altar-makers (Altarista). Altares del Mundo has become an important part of the greater Sacramento arts community, providing viewers a glimpse into expanding cultural traditions and new interpretations of these customs within our society.
